WORKERS in Halton's Boots stores have been reassured their jobs are safe for now ahead of the high street chemist's proposed £6.7bn merger with UniChem.

Around 1,000 jobs are predicted to go if the deal goes through but the message to employees in Widnes' Albert Road and Runcorn's shopping city branches is 'business as usual'.

"We are looking to continue providing our service to customers and patients and we're expecting very little to change," said Tricia Kennerley, chief services officer at Alliance UniChem. "It's too early to say about job cuts as the proposed merger was only announced on Monday but until the outcome, on a local level it's business as usual."

The merger is expected to bring together Boots' 1,400 mainly high street stores and Alliance UniChem's 939 outlets, such as Moss the Chemists to save around £100m a year.
