A CHURCH has shut its doors for the final time with hundreds turning out to say a fond farewell.
Norris Street Methodist Church held its last service on Sunday afternoon after serving the community of Orford for decades.
The parishioners took the decision themselves to close the church, built last century, because there were too many repairs to be made to the building and the congregation is too old to carry them out.
More than 200 parishioners turned out for the closing service on Sunday and church minister, the Rev Gwen Bamforth, said she wanted to pay thanks to all those who helped out.
She said: "I would like to say a huge thank you to the churches around the Methodist circuit that put an arrangement into the flower festival, Norris Street Church looked beautiful. Such wondrous flower displays on the theme of harvest /celebration, every one different. The vibrant colours brought the church building alive.
"On Saturday it was good to see and hear folk, many came through the doors, there was lots of laughter and a few tears.
"The church was bulging to hold the more than 200 on Sunday afternoon for the closing service. The Rev Michael Parrott was the guest preacher, he was minister at Norris Street 25 years ago, his theme Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever, was well received.
"Thank you all from Norris Street for your support!"
Carol Leatham and Rob Heath were featured in the Guardian in July when they were the last couple to marry in the church.
Parishioners will now use Latchford Methodist Church.
