NATIONAL speed limit signs have provoked outrage among residents.

People living along Delph Lane, Houghton Green, have presented MP Helen Jones with a petition expressing their strong opposition to the recently erected 60mph signs.

They argue that many wider roads in and around Winwick have had residential areas of roads reclassified to 30 mph, including Hollins Lane, the south end of Delph Lane going into Houghton Green, Southworth Lane, Mustard Lane. Myddleton Lane was recently restricted to 40 mph.

They give seven reason why the 520-metre stretch of road should be reclassified.

They are:

l rural buildings have been converted into domestic dwellings with young families living there

l large number of children live in Delph Lane

l two sharp bends within the 520 metres, both chevron signed

l walking is extremely dangerous due to there being only a very small footpath which is non-existent in places

l lane is not very wide and HGVs take more than half the road width forcing cars to the side

l the lane floods badly at two particular points when there is a downpour of rain making higher speeds more dangerous

l dangerous when entering and leaving driveways.

Mrs Jones MP said: "I fully support the residents. If the speed limit remains the same in the residential area it will, unfortunately, only be a matter of time before a serious accident occurs. I don't think it is at all unreasonable to ask for this stretch of road to be reclassified to 30mph."
