WARRINGTON Borough Council looks to be on a collision course with the police.

The town's Liberal Democrats have submitted a motion to be heard at Monday's full council meeting which expresses "regret" surrounding the changes in the higher reaches of the police force.

There have been three heads of Warrington police within the past six months and the matter has come to a head again within the past month when it was announced that Chief Superintendent Helen King would be leaving her job to take up a position at Merseyside.

Now, Lib Dem leader Clr Ian Marks will call on the council to write to Peter Fahy, Chief Constable of Cheshire Police, to ask for a greater continuity.

The motion states: "This council regrets changes in senior and middle ranking police personnel within the Warrington area and agrees to write to the chief constable and the chairman of the police authority stressing the need for greater continuity in personnel."

Ch Supt King replaced Clive Pownell who retired just two months after taking on the role.

The job shuffles have already prompted criticism in council circles with parish councillors in Lymm writing earlier in the year to voice their concern.

Meanwhile, the Lib Dems are also bringing a motion to protect Warrington Police Force.

As reported in last week's Warrington Guardian, Cheshire could be forced to merge with neighbouring forces under radical new proposals.
