THE biennial Whitley Village Show, staged by Whitley WI for the whole village with entry open to everyone connected, has taken place.
Entries were down on previous years but an enthusiastic crowd turned up in the afternoon to view the exhibits, have tea and attend the prizegiving.
Helen Carey, WI president, welcomed everyone and introduced Noel and Elizabeth Alms who opened the show and presented the prizes. The couple have lived in Whitley for 40 years and have always been very involved in the community.
Anna Spencer, this year's Whitley Rose Queen, presented Mrs Alms with a basket of flowers and Mr Alms with a buttonhole after which they presented the prizes.
Joyce Rumney had been the driving force behind the show until a short time before her death last year at the age of 99, and Mr and Mrs Michael Astill gave a silver salver from her estate to commemorate her name and be presented for the most outstanding contribution to the show.
On this, the first occasion, Mike presented the salver to Pat Holbrook for the standard of her entries and her work on the show committee.
Pat also won the WI Cup for the WI member with the most points and the prize for the most entries.
The Children's Cup was won by Athena Critchley who won many points for her entries in the under six classes.
In closing the afternoon's activities, Noel Alms thanked all those who had worked so hard to put on the show - the organising committee, the judges, stewards, providers of refreshment, the exhibitors and the visiting public.
