Speakers Club
by Peter Gribbin
THE club's newly appointed president Brian Carter chaired our president's evening which opened the new season.
Speakers were given a choice of reading an extract from a book or magazine, and explaining the significance to them, or giving a standard speech from the lectern on a recent news article that had some impact on them. The members came up with a variety of readings and speeches, both humorous and serious.
Peter Bradley, the education director, was asked to select his favourite speaker of the night and chose Bernard Marron, who had enthralled us all about Rasputin and the deaths he caused even after his own hideous murder. Bernard was rewarded with a bottle of wine.
New members are always welcome at the club, which is essentially a learning organisation and is part of the nationwide Association of Speakers Clubs, with some 140 clubs throughout the country. Mike Davies on 818572 has more details. The next meeting will be on Thursday, October 6 at The Village Hotel.
