CULCHETH will be playing out a constitutional crisis on stage next month.

The Culcheth Players are delving into recent history with their latest production, Crown Matrimonial, by Royce Ryton.

Rehearsals are well under way with the fascinating story of Edward VIII's abdication, which took place in 1936 and threw Britain into an unprecedented major constitutional crisis.

The play is set in Queen Mary's drawing room at Marlborough House between 1936 and 1945 and focuses on the private family drama between Edward VIII and members of the Royal family, which finally culminated with the abdication.

Director Colin Forster said: "This is an engrossing and moving study of the background and consequences leading to the most significant decision in our history. Not to be missed."

Margaret Fallon will play Queen Mary and King Edward VIII will be played by David Hill. Also performing will be Brenda Earl, Jenny Procter, Alex Urmston, Anna Shaw, Anne Witter, Mark Taylor, Rosemary Powell and Paul Oldfield.

The production will be running from October 12 - 15 at the Culcheth Sports and Social club on Charnock Road. The play starts at 7.45pm and tickets cost £5 and £4 for concessions. Tickets are available from the secretary on 765136 or from the club bar.

l Culcheth Players are keen to welcome new members and anyone interested in joining should go along to rehearsals at Culcheth Sports Club on Monday evenings at 8pm.
