MEN taking pot shots at Barnton wildlife have horrified witnesses and caused fears for the safety of people using the Trent and Mersey Canal.
Police are appealing for information after the bodies of a number of ducks and squirrels were found in the canal and woods by Barnton Tunnel, near Saltersford Locks.
Barnton constable PC Mark Williams said: "It's a lovely spot enjoyed by all but this inconsiderate and cruel use of firearms spoils it for everybody.
"I've spoken to people who saw the bodies and were very upset."
He added: "When I saw the photographs myself it really hit home and I hope it prompts people to phone with information."
He described the offenders as two men aged between 20 and 25 who fired high powered air rifles at the ducks from a wooded area close to the entrance of Barnton Tunnel.
He said: "I would hope these lads wouldn't fire at people but there's a danger someone could be caught in the crossfire.
"With a weapon of that size they could cause serious injury to a person not just an animal."
Vic Blackwell, bailiff for Northwich Anglers' Association who patrols the River Weaver and Trent and Mersey Canal, said: "This needs to be highlighted - it's disgusting.
"People aren't allowed to shoot ducks indiscriminately and these have been shot on the canal, which is a public right of way."
He added: "These ducks and squirrels are not shot in a proper manner - they are left wounded and have to crawl away and die somewhere.
"It's completely cruel and wrong."
Anyone with any information should ring Northwich NPU's voicemail facility on 0845 4586 392 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
