A long and winding path... that's just the description

"It is not even a sentence and has minimal punctuation," said Open Spaces secretary Kate Ashbrook.

"How is the public expected to understand exactly what the council proposes to do with this public highway? We suspect the council hopes that people won't understand it and therefore won't oppose it."

Halton Council is asking Halton Magistrates on September 30 to move Widnes footpath 74.

"We have called on the council to rewrite the notice in plain English," added Kate.

A Halton Council spokesperson said: "This footpath follows a complicated route and therefore the description needed to be very detailed and precise. We accept that the notice was particularly long. Halton Council has a Plain English guide and encourages employees to use these guidelines when writing copy. We refute the suggestion that we deliberately tried to baffle readers."
