BT has been forced to apologise to two police forces - including Cheshire Constabulary - after a blunder in the production of its latest directory.
In the latest BT phone book, it is stated on page 241 that for Cheshire Police you should turn to the force's advert on page 242.
But the telephone number listed is actually for Gloucestershire Police and a number of Warrington residents have already fallen foul of the mistake.
One Paddington resident, who spotted the mistake, said: "It's hard enough getting the police to respond when you dial the right number.
"If you're calling Cheltenham and want them to tackle yobs in Dallam, they're just going to laugh at you."
A BT spokesman this week said the telecoms giant had apologised to both forces concerned.
The correct number for general enquiries to Cheshire Police is 0845 458 0000.
