DEVOTED Wolves supporter George Warburton is no longer sitting on the sidelines, instead he's enjoying every home game from right behind the goal post after his cherished wish came true and his ashes were scattered on The Halliwell Jones Stadium pitch.

George, of Vulcan Close, Padgate, died suddenly aged 60 in July, leaving his friends and family shattered.

The lifelong Wolves fan, who suffered with cerebral palsy and ME attended very home game, making his way there in his little blue disability car.

But when his health deteriorated and the journey was no longer possible, he would watch his beloved Wire on the television at home, longing to be able to watch from the stands.

Back in 1983, George had mentioned to his two brothers and sister June that he wanted to be cremated and his ashes scattered behind the goal post at the Wolves ground.

Sister June, of Waywell Close, Cinnamon Brow, said: "At the time we thought he was joking but it turned out he was serious. We tried to talk him out of it because we never thought it was possible. We had a real laugh at him but he just kept on saying that that was going to be his final resting place.

"When George died we were all devastated and my son contacted Paul Cullen to ask if it was possible. We couldn't believe it when he said yes; it was a real comfort for us at such a terrible time.

"The club were just wonderful, especially Paul Cullen, we can't thank them enough, it means so much to us and to George. Wherever he is I'm sure he's a very happy man."

She added: "When George got really ill and couldn't go to the matches anymore it used to break his heart to have to sit at home and watch the games on the television. Now he's right where he's always wanted to be and he'll never miss a game again."
