struggle to hold on

WARRINGTON could not quite hang on to secure a draw as they lost by 26 runs against Didsbury on Saturday.

Steve Haydon took 4 for 72 and veteran Paul Agar grabbed 3 for 37 to help bowl Didsbury out for 153, but although James Hughes made 48 no-one stayed with him and Warrington were dismissed for 127 with only two overs of the game remaining.

Warrington's second team also lost despite a magnificent all-round performance from Andy Kirkby.

He struck 106 not out in only 61 balls before taking 5 for 44 as Warrington defended a total of 216 for 2 declared at Oulton Park, with Dave Baxter also making 72 not out.

But the home side paced their innings to perfection and reached the target in the last over with four wickets to spare, although Warrington did collect enough bonus points from the match to avoid relegation.

Warrington's thirds finished their season with a five-wicket win at Timperley to leave them in the top six for the fourth year in a row.

Timperley made 208 for 7 in their innings, with Dave Hunter taking 3 for 40 and Mans Naseem grabbing 3 for 86, before an unbeaten 90 from Brian Boys and 47 from T O'Neill saw Warrington to victory.

The fourth team suffered a heavy defeat at home to Cheadle Hulme after being skittled out for 81 despite 15-year-old Tom Lloyd hitting 35 runs.

Amir Rashid bowled well in the visitors' reply but he could not prevent them reaching the total with seven wickets to spare.
