WARRINGTON Athletics Club runner Jason McGonigle will compete in the World Mountain Running Championships on Saturday after flying out to New Zealand.
The 16-year-old will take part in the junior men's race at the championships, which will be held at Mount Victoria, Wellington, after qualifying by finishing second in the trial race in July.
Danny Cliffe finished fifth in the Junior Great North Run in Newcastle in a time of 14mins 30secs, despite competing against athletes who were up to two years older than him.
The club's under 15s boys' team won their event at the North West Counties Road Relay Championships in Blackpool on Saturday and secured the county title in the process.
Stephen Broadhurst ran the fastest time of the day on the lead leg, before Matt O'Neill and Matt Jackson brought the team home 54 seconds clear of the rest of the field.
The under 15s girls' A team - Jade Llewellyn, Hannah Tart and Louise Sullivan - also clinched victory, as did the under 13s boys' A team, which was made up of Ryan O'Neill, Danny Jackson and Tom Jervis, who recorded the quickest time of the day in his age group.
The under 17s girls' team of Lucy Gemmell, Sarah Cartwright and Heather Timmins finished third overall and third in Cheshire, while the under 13s girls' trio of Rachel Jefferson, Sally Kershaw-Moore and Shauny Wilkinson were eighth overall and second in Cheshire, and the under 13s boys' B team of Adam Jefferson, Luke Johnston and Jonathan Lee were also eighth overall and second in Cheshire.
Paul Dodsworth finished eighth in the Trafford 10km road race, with Mark Smith 235th, while Alison Patrick was second in the senior 800m at the Blackpool and Fylde Athletics Club open meeting.
Warrington secured a one-two in the under 17s 800m, with Heather Roberts first and Heather Timmins second.
Jordan Barlow finished second in the under 11s boys' triathlon in Macclesfield, while Heather Beeton was seventh, Mollie Crewe was 10th and Rebecca Hazzleton finished 11th in the under 11s girls' event.
Sarah Lewis won the Cheshire title after finishing fourth overall in the under 13s girls' competition, while Chris Healy was 12th overall and seventh in Cheshire in the under 13s boys' race.
Amy Talbot finished fourth overall and second in Cheshire in the under 15s girls' pentathlon.
