A PEDESTRIAN crossing will stay in place in Grappenhall, despite fears that it is becoming unsafe.

Members of Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council wrote to the borough council after concerns were raised that the crossing on Knutsford Road was unsafe.

And, with plenty more new buildings in the Knutsford Road and Bradshaw Lane area, councillors worry the traffic situation could get worse.

Clr Ted Lafferty, former Mayor and parish councillor, said: "This is an accident waiting to happen.

"Once the building work (on the former Dog and Dart pub site) is complete, the traffic might get better - but it could well get worse.

"The problem with traffic and parking in that area has been going on since I became a councillor and we have been asking for more parking restrictions."

According to Clr Lafferty, the parish council wrote to ask for possible waiting restriction and zig-zag lines around the pedestrian crossing because of problems with people parking close to the junction.

But a reply to be discussed at tonight's (Thursday) parish council meeting states that, although the crossing will continue to be monitored, borough council highway officials are satisfied with the current location.

In the letter, Phil Johnson, the borough council's head of transportation, said: "Any attempt to limit parking on the highway in front of commercial premises on Knutsford Road are likely to be met with strong opposition form the proprietors of those properties."

Tonight's meeting of the parish council, which is due to get under way at 7.30pm, will be held in the council offices on Bradshaw Lane.
