FAMILY and friends will be cheering on Mary Canavan as she has her head shaved.

Mary, aged 55, underwent surgery in August to have her second breast removed.

She is due to start six months of chemotherapy, followed by radiotherapy.

She thought she would have her head shaved rather than watch it fall out as a result of the treatment.

Mary hopes to raise a minimum of £500 from the head shave, which is due to take place on October 1.

Money raised will go to the breast cancer unit at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, where Mary had her surgery.

Mary lives in Shakespeare Close, Kidsgrove, and worked until recently as an assistant at Shady Grove Stores in Shady Grove, Alsager.

She had one of her breasts removed about five years ago after cancer was diagnosed.

Cancer was found in the other breast on July 5, and she underwent a mastectomy on August 1.

"I wanted to raise money for the breast cancer unit because of the quality of the care and the staff, who have been wonderful," said Mary.

"I've also had so much love and support from my family and friends."

Mary is to have her head shaved in the shape of a ribbon, the symbol of the breast cancer charity, at 7.30pm at The Talisman pub in Furlong Road, Kidsgrove.

Anyone who would like to sponsor the head shave can ring Mary on 01782 787260.

She is also planning a car boot sale in aid of the hospital.
