ROCK and pop legends could be set to perform in Halton after exciting plans were revealed for a huge music festival at Spike Island next year.

The three-day event, known as 'Spike Island 06', will be held over the May Bank Holiday weekend and is expected to attract up to 80,000 people.

Adam Franklin, director of organisers Surprisingly Good Events, said: "We felt there was a gap in the market with there being no Glastonbury this year and Spike Island is a great location to have a festival for its natural defences and obviously, for its history."

The festival will kick off with a free family day showcasing local bands and will be followed by a second day featuring modern and retro rock bands that will be known as 'Halton Rocks'. The third day, called 'Halton Pops' will be a massive pop concert.

Leader of Halton Council Cllr Tony McDermott said: "We look forward to once again bringing some top quality acts to Halton to help showcase what a great borough we've got."

The festival is scheduled to begin on May 27, exactly 16 years to the day after The Stone Roses' legendary concert at Spike Island, prompting speculation the band's frontman, Ian Brown, could be tempted into a nostalgic appearance.

Adam said: "Nothing is finalised yet but the acts we're hoping to attract are as big as it gets. We're talking to acts that have had number one singles and albums."

Organisers promise tickets would cost under £20 and concession stands would have to conform with strict price brackets to ensure the festival remained an affordable family day out.
