A DIAMOND couple from Middlewich are still sparkling six decades after they tied the knot.
Harold and Mary Evison, of Elm Road, will be celebrating 60 years of marriage tomorrow, Thursday, with family and friends at Hunter's Lodge in Crewe.
But had things gone according to plan when the wedding was arranged, Harold and Mary would have another week to wait before they could celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.
Harold, 82, and Mary, 79, were due to wed on September 29 but it was while Harold was home on leave from the Navy that the couple decided to move the date forward.
Harold said: "I was given 48 hours' leave and I got in at Crewe late at night and walked all the way to Middlewich."
Mary added: "He came to see me at my mother's house and we talked about it together and decided to bring it forward a week.
"We had to do a lot of rushing round but it all worked out in the end."
The couple, who met while walking along Wheelock Street, were married at St Michael and All Angels Church, with Harold dressed in his naval white tapes.
And it would seem that Harold's nautical experience has carried through into their social life.
Following their retirement from RHM Foods, where they both worked for almost 90 years between them, Harold and Mary have enjoyed several Mediterranean cruises and like to keep their garden blooming.
They attribute their long and happy marriage to working together and being able to make each other laugh.
Mary said: "We've pulled together, it's as simple as that. We've rallied along through the tough times and enjoyed the good times.
Harold added: "She's a good'un."
