A PETITION has been handed to Cheshire County Council in the hope of improving road safety outside a Middlewich nursery.

At Middlewich Town Council's meeting on Monday night, Michael Lavelle, of Booth Lane, asked councillors to support a 100-strong petition to have double yellow lines painted on the road surrounding Leaps and Bounds.

Mr Lavelle said: "A number of residents of Booth Lane and parents and guardians of children at the nursery have signed the petition in the hope of getting double yellow lines painted on the road between Kitfield Avenue and Booth Lane."

He said there was a serious problem with visibility which he attributed to cars and vans parked on the grass verges.

He said: "Parents bringing their children to and from the nursery are very worried about the current situation. There have been several near misses of late and although the police have been cooperating, in the long term I am worried the situation will return to as it was."

Councillors will forward the petition and concerns to the highways department.

But Clr Simon McGrory said that while he supported the petition, it was important to note that the town council had objected to plans for the nursery's development on grounds of road safety.
