IT certainly was a match made in heaven when Jack and Peggy Leng first crossed paths at an RAF football game in Norfolk 60 years ago.

And the Winsford pair, who live in Delamere Rise, have proved they have the stamina to last more than 90 minutes as they celebrate their diamond anniversary tomorrow, Thursday.

Jack, 83, said: "We got talking at the match and just clicked straightaway. I was posted to North Africa shortly afterwards and she wrote all the time so I knew it would last."

Norfolk-born Peggy, who worked for the Women's Royal Voluntary Service before retiring, said: "I worked at my dad's tearoom in Norfolk while Jack was abroad and we got married at St Nicholas Church in Ipswich with about a dozen friends and family.

"We couldn't honeymoon because Jack only had a couple of days' leave."

But when Yorkshire man Jack was demobbed in 1946, the couple's travelling really began.

Jack said: "My job as a local government housing manager took me all over and we moved to Winsford in 1960 with our children Aileen and Tony.

"We also love caravanning and at one point spent as much time on the road as we did in our house."

But the pair also enjoy activities closer to home. Jack said: "We spend a lot of time at the Dingle Centre. I'm having computer lessons there and Peggy goes three or four times a week to meet friends and play whist."

Peggy added: "Jack and I have many shared interests like bowls but we've always spent time doing our own things too which is very important. Give and take and a lot of patience have kept us together."

The couple will celebrate with friends and family at home ahead of a November meal planned to coincide with Peggy's 80th birthday.
