THE 37th Vale Royal Show was once again a successful day, showcasing a wide array of talent from within the borough.

The number of exhibits was up on last year and the standard throughout was exceptional.

As ever the Northwich and District Chrysanthemum Society Show added a splash of colour to proceedings with some spectacular exhibits.

One of the organisers, Phil Harding, manager of the civic hall, said: "Of particular merit this year were the entrants to the baking and preserves section which our strict WI judge described as being of the highest standard.

"The newly reorganised handicraft section saw wonderful exhibits from all corners of the borough and from all age groups and abilities.

"There was good support from local day centres who provided many exhibits and took a large number of first prizes.

"The schools section was our best yet with more schools entering than before and the standard of work was incredible."

Wharton Primary School took first place but was closely followed by Hartford and Leaf Lane. St Chad's and Barnton were both highly commended.

Mayor of Vale Royal Clr Norman Wright presented prizes and trophies at the end of the show.

But chrysanthemum exhibitor Brian Tench said this was the most disappointing show yet as it had not been properly publicised and hardly any members of the public had turned up.

Brian, 65, of Navigation Road, said at 3.50pm - when it should have been at its busiest - there were just two people walking round the show.

He said: "I am very, very disappointed.

"Children were going on to the stage to receive awards and there was no applause.

"It is all down to the borough council. It should have advertised the show more."

He added: "Many of the exhibitors went to a lot of trouble and did a lot of work for this.

"If they carry on like this there will be no show."
