AN INSATIABLE need for speed takes Dave Rogers one step, or rather one wheel, further than everybody else.

Dave, 39, of Runcorn Road, Barnton, broke his own world record for the fastest motorcycle wheelie when he rode his Suzuki Hayabussa at Elvington Air Field, Yorkshire, at a speed of 148mph.

In doing so he beat his previous best of 136.9mph set on October 28, 2002.

He organised the event with the help of his friends and this time challenged more than 30 other riders to match him.

Later in the day Terry Calcott raised the bar to set a new world record speed of 156.5mph.

Dave, known to his friends as Dodge, said: "It was quite humbling to see Terry go one better than me.

"I was very surprised at the standard, gobsmacked if I'm honest."

So what do his family and friends think about him risking his life in this way?

Wife Denise said: "Dave knows what he is doing, it is an amazing thing to watch when he's in action - there is a lot of skill involved and it puts enormous pressure on the body."

Dodge added: "Denise is quite into it, a part of her is concerned when I'm on the runway but she supports me more than ever now."

He plans to stage the event again next year and Dodge is hopeful he will be able to invite the public along after enjoying a flawless safety record at the first two meetings.

More important than that is his hunger to reclaim his crown.

"I'm confident that after a few tweaks to the bike I'll be in good shape to break the record again," he said.
