WITH key batsmen Jonny Wales and Eoin Welch seconded to the 1sts Winnington Park 2nds were always going to struggle against Congleton.
And with Rob Begbie snatched by the 1sts on the morning of the match the fight against relegation was made even more difficult.
It was a fight Park were destined to lose.
Batting first, Park reached 77-6 with Ian Johns (33) and Martin Evans (25). A stand of 56 between captain Howard Burtwistle and all rounder Bryan Shingler took the score to 113 from 45 overs before Shingler was run out for 21.
Burtwistle went on to score 42 and the innings closed on 145-9.
Winnington then had to bowl Congleton out to take 22 points and give them hope of survival.
At 37-4 Winnington looked to be in with a chance.
Some dour batting then took the score to 60 from 30 overs and 91 from 41 before the fifth wicket fell.
Congleton skipper Beaumont hit a quick 31 to win the game in the penultimate over.
Burtwistle said: "After seven years of being the 2nds captain I have decided to hand over to one of the younger players who can rebuild the team to gain promotion back to the first division next year.
"I have yet to make a decision whether to retire or keep going as a player.
"I have enjoyed my time at Winnington Park where both the players and the committee have been very supportive."
