POLICE are appealing for help in solving a £3,000 raid on a social club.

The gang smashed through steel doors, deactivated an alarm and stole security footage of their daring early-morning break-in at the Shaw Heath Social Club.

"They must have made a real racket," said Detective Constable Stuart York.

"It is not as if it is in a secluded area so someone may have heard something."

Fingerprints have been found at the scene and one of the thieves is believed to have left behind a blue sweatshirt. Police were surprised the offenders were able to prise open strengthened steel doors at the back of the club.

When they got inside they walked into a corridor filmed by CCTV.

But the raiders smashed open an office door and stole the camera footage.

"It really is like trying to break into Fort Knox there," said Sergeant Andy Gardner.

A taxi driver raised the alarm after at least one suspicious vehicle was spotted in the club car park.

More than £3,000 was later found to have been taken from cash boxes, gaming machines and the snooker table.

"We'd like information about anyone who appears to have an out-of-the-ordinary amount of money on them," said DC York.
