WIDNES slipped to a 32-16 defeat at the hands of Oldershaw on Saturday in the first round of the Powergen Intermediate cup.

They were looking to achieve a morale boosting victory against a side based a division below them, but it was not to be.

The game got off to a slow start before the hosts took a 3-0 lead with a penalty. This was extended further with a converted try on 15 minutes.

As Widnes got more into the game they managed to reduce the arrears ro make the score 10-8.

Widnes then suffered a major blow as Oldershaw added a second try on the stroke of half time.

The second period belonged almost entirely to Oldershaw.

As well as the defeat, Widnes suffered a further injury worry as in-form centre Alex Gardiner limped from the field.

WIDNES backed up again with another superb win over Mossley Hill.

It was the father and son half back combination of Graham and Andrew Riley who stole the show.

For the first period of the game, the game was equally balanced and swung from end to end, before Widnes created panic in the visitor's defence to score three long-distance tries from Witter, Riley and Gill.

Despite this, Mossley Hill had best period of sustained pressure in the game but were unable to break down a tough and resolute home defence.

From then, the visitors seemed to lose heart and Widnes were able to capitalise on some good ball from Eccles, Ellis and Syers which allowed Jack Cosgrove to show his pace wide out. Ged Snee marked his return with a try, along with Jon Witter who scored his second as did man of the match Andrew Riley who also kicked four conversions.

WIDNES followed up their success from last week's tournament at Waterloo with a convincing victory.

Semple was first to score following a neat break by Danny Harrison.

Whitfield, Barton and McNally were denied by a strong and determined defence from their Liverpool neighbours.

Morgan went over by the posts after good drives from Williamson and Giles. Morgan goaled to leave the Wids 12-0 up at the break.

The second half was one-way traffic with Phil Harrison going over twice revelling in his new hooking role.

Fleming scorched over from 40 yards out quickly followed by Varley who raced 60 yards to score a superb solo try.

Hatton was next over after great work from Forrest and Hetherington.

Semple rounded off the scoring with Morgan tagging on the goals.
