CHESHIRE County Council said it had not received any formal approach from Congleton Borough Council about transferring control of leisure centres to schools and withdrawing finance.
"We would obviously be extremely concerned at any such proposal," said a county council spokesman.
The borough council is seeking to transfer the operation of leisure centres at Alsager, Sandbach, Middlewich and Holmes Chapel to schools.
The move is one of a series of proposals aimed at saving the authority £1.5 million.
Alsager Leisure Centre is owned by Cheshire County Council, and funded by the council and Congleton Borough Council.
The county's funding support for the centre this year is £105,000.
"In April 2003 we entered into a transfer of control agreement with regards to Alsager Leisure Centre on the basis Congleton Borough Council's financial input would remain unchanged," added the spokesman.
"This legally binding agreement ensures finances previously distributed directly by the county to the leisure centre now go to the school.
"It does not mean that the school takes over the running of the leisure centre."
