BILLY Elliot challenged the view of ballet dancing boys and now a Warrington drama group hopes to combat the prejudices faced by boys who go on stage.

The Pyramid is running six half-day workshops in schools to get boys interested and weekly theatre classes at the town's arts centre, for girls and boys aged seven to 11 and 12 to 18, run on Monday nights.

A spokesman said: "While a career as a theatre actor is a prestigious one in the eyes of adults, children and boys especially think it is basically 'uncool'.

"This can be very soul-destroying and intimidating, so most young boys are prepared to sacrifice their interests for the sake of peer acceptance."

The National Association of Youth Theatre granted the Pyramid £2,000 to run a project that would address problem. The money has been spent on research, school workshops and the marketing, with results to be fed back to NAYT members during a December meeting.
