THE roads at risk from congestion when the massive Omega development begins have been named.

The planners have identified the locations that will be most affected by 226-hectare business site.

If work starts next year as is hoped, the vulnerable roads are Burtonwood Road, Sankey Way and Junction 8 of the M62.

And the roads most at risk if the full development is completed by 2021 are Westbrook Crescent and Cromwell Avenue.

These are the most sensitive locations, but work will also be needed at Manchester Road (A57), Europa Boulevard, Lingley Green Avenue, Westbrook Way, and Winwick Road (A49).

The Highways Agency delayed the Omega development for two years while it demanded more research into which roads could be affected.

The planning document says computer modelling predicts traffic in Warrington will grow by 27 per cent by 2027, partly thanks to Omega.

The plan warns that: "Based on this predicted growth the Warrington Urban Road Network and surrounding routes will be congested."

A total of 90 per cent of employees are expected to use their cars to get to work and the first two Omega phases would create around 19,000 car trips a day.

But massive improvements are planned in the currently inadequate public transport system to make more people leave their cars at home - the council wants a 'step change' in the quality of services.

Plans to reduce traffic on the roads include building more cycleways, greenways and three bus stops within Omega itself, running up Cromwell Avenue in the direction of Newton-le-Willows.
