A FORMER Burtonwood Primary School pupil fears an accident is waiting to happen on Green Lane, despite a new speed hump.
Glen Beckett, aged 38, of Mercer Street, was hopeful that the hump put in place during school holidays would slow down traffic outside the school. However, after seeing it, he is convinced the hump will fail to make a real difference.
He said: "Green Lane is treacherous when children are being dropped off and picked up. Cars make the road a single track, and this, coupled with blind bends and people stepping out from between parked cars, makes it very dangerous. I fear a serious accident is waiting to happen.
"The new ramp is about as good as a chocolate fireguard. It won't stop people speeding."
Mr Beckett said he expected at least five sharp ramps along Green Lane but if that is impossible believes it should become a one-way system or parents should be stopped from parking along Green Lane and its corner with Phipps Lane.
Clr Terry O'Neill, a governor at Burtonwood Primary School, agreed that there was a parking problem near to the school.
He said: "I do accept that there is heavy parking around the schools in Burtonwood. Unfortunately, it is a fact of life but I do wish parents would walk their children to school.
"Even if we were to lay yellow lines, parents would still drop off their children on Green Lane.
"The raised hump we have fitted acts as a level crossing for the children and to slow down traffic."
