YOUNGSTERS with a burning ambition for a career in the fire service can learn what it takes to become a firefighter at Birchwood Fire Station.

The crew's cadet force is on the lookout for new members between the ages of 13 and 18 to receive training in many of the skills needed to become a real life firefighter.

The boys and girls of the cadet force, which has been running for about six years, get to train in areas such as hose running, using the ladders and may even get to go out to do home safety checks with officers.

Membership is open to youngsters across Culcheth, Risley, Birchwood and Croft, and firefighter Gavin Hanson, who runs the cadet force, said: "It's great fun and the cadets get to learn about being a fireman."

Anyone interested in joining can contact Birchwood Fire Station on 818379.
