A SMALL army is set to descend upon Middlewich this weekend when the first Norman festival takes place.

For two days the town's Norman heritage will be in the spotlight in an event that promises to rival the hugely popular Roman Middlewich Festival.

Celebrating Norman Middlewich from 1070 to the early 1200s, the festival will feature activities such as living exhibitions, medieval stalls, displays and battle re-enactments.

The funs starts at 10.30am on Saturday when Norman soldiers will be taking up arms and marching through Wheelock Street before the official opening ceremony at midday.

And the town council is looking forward to welcoming an aristocratic visitor in the shape of the current baron of Kinderton, Lord Vernon, who will attend the opening ceremony at Harbutt's Field.

Dave Thompson, Middlewich Town Council's event organiser, is busy putting the finishing touches to the festival and can't wait for Saturday.

He said: "I'm really looking forward to the weekend, especially the arena displays each afternoon.

"I'm assured the stunt horses and riders for the medieval joust are the best in the country and the falconry display will feature the biggest eagle I've ever seen up close.

"There really is too much going on to list but we hope many people will take the opportunity to enjoy the guided tours of St Michael's Church, Kinderton moated manor site and the community dig."

He added: "All involved have our fingers crossed for a dry weekend and we hope everyone attending enjoys the festival."

Although there will be no parking available at the site during the event, there will be a free park and ride service from the car park of ERF, in Pochin Way.
