POLICE officers have made moves to reassure the public following the death of a Middlewich man outside a town centre pub.

As reported in last week's Guardian, former town councillor Emma Brown said it raised the issue of a greater need for police presence in the town centre at the weekend.

But Insp Chris Jones, commander of Congleton Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said officers would be doing all they can to reassure the public.

He said: "Current statistics say that Middlewich is actually the safest place in the borough but it's very difficult to reassure people when something as serious as this happens.

"There have been two such incidents in the borough within the past month but they are not related and I am very conscious of making people aware that these are isolated incidents.

"My message to the public would be that we will be ensuring a greater police presence in the evenings and at weekends and that anti-social behaviour resulting in violence and connected to alcohol will not be tolerated."
