POLICE are stepping up patrols after an increase in vandalism and yob behaviour at a Northwich cemetery.

Witton officer PC Steve Jones has joined forces with Northwich Town Council in a bid to curb damage and destruction at St Helen's churchyard and hopes residents will also help by reporting any incidents of youth nuisance.

PC Jones said: "We're receiving reports that a group of young people are meeting up in the churchyard, destroying flowers, taking pots and toys off graves and causing general disrespectful and anti-social behaviour.

"It is believed alcohol is a factor because empty cans and bottles are being found strewn across the yard.

"This is simply not acceptable and over the coming weeks we'll be stepping up patrols at key times to ensure these incidents stop."

The police and town council have agreed that one of the entrance gates to the churchyard will be kept locked every evening.

Town council operations manager Jeff Sharman said: "It's such a shame that we have to take steps because of the actions of a minority of people.

"But both the council and police are committed to sorting this problem out and we'll do everything we can to achieve that."

PC Jones said: "Anyone who doesn't have a legitimate reason for being in the churchyard will be escorted from the site.

"We are taking this issue very seriously and will deal with the culprits firmly and effectively.

"If that means arrests and reprimands then so be it."

He urged residents to contact him with details of when incidents are occurring, descriptions of culprits or any other details to help police tackle the problems.
