THE SHABBY state of Bank Quay station is bad for the town's image.
That is the view of the big shots trying to draw a plan to get it revamped.
They want to set up a public/private partnership to fund the work because Virgin Trains have not spent the money on the station themselves.
The scheme would see the borough council, Virgin and the North West Development Agency (NWDA) invest in the station together,
Steve Broomhead, chief executive of the NWDA, said: "We have concerns about a number of railways stations on the West Coast Mainline in terms of the quality of the stations, and it is a high priority to the local community and to the business community.
"The quality of a station is really important for the town's image and prosperity.
"We are at the stage where we are putting together a partnership including a number of private sector investors to see what can be done to improve Warrington Bank Quay - because the station is still stuck in the 1950s."
John Mooney, of the Rail Passengers Council, said: "Train Operating Companies don't always have the money to pay for improvements. So we welcome any improvements and funding."
