A REMARKABLE performance saw Warrington Thai Boxing wonder Warren Brown win his second British title at the weekend.

Brown added the British SINTA lightweight title (61 kilos) to the one he holds at 58 kilos.

His performance was remarkable in that he only accepted his fight at Stockport three days before it took place. This was due to clubmate James Burgess having to pull out and vacate his title through a swollen rib injury.

Brown, only 19, had to step up a weight category and risked the chance of being out-muscled by experienced 28-year-old Tony Goodwin.

But as Brown's instructor Dave Jackson says: "Warren is very strong. He battered Goodwin and brought the title back to Warrington with a unanimous points verdict."

When Brown was given the verdict, Jackson said his student threw the belt out of the ring and into the lap of Burgess.

Jackson added: "Warren just refused to lose, he had to win it. He only took the fight on to win the belt for Budgie (Burgess)."

It is not clear yet whether or not Brown will defend his new title. Ironically, he may vacate it so that Burgess can fight for it again.

Brown is the third Warrington Thai Boxing Club member to hold the title. Pele Hall is a previous winner and it has been in Warrington hands for the past five years.

Brown's win came on the same day that his clubmate Kevin Harper won a world welterweight title eliminator at Everton.

Harper knocked out Welshman Malcolm Vernon in the fourth round with a stunning head kick, hopefully to earn himself a world title shot next year.

To cap off a triumphant weekend for the town, another Warrington fighter won a North West title on the Stockport undercard.

Rhys Edwards, of Warrington Muay Thai Kick Boxing Studio, stopped Jason Parkinson.
