PARENTS are being urged to help catch idiots who have left potentially lethal nails and glass on a soccer pitch used by children.

The broken glass and nails were strewn over Mill Hayes playing fields in Biddulph, which are used by teams from the Biddulph Lads'n'Dads football league.

Moorlands officers were alerted to the dangerous debris by some of the numerous soccer teams who use the playing fields in Tunstall Road.

And concern for the safety of adults and children sparked a call for members of the public to take care when playing sport there.

In addition people are being asked to report anything suspicious, including items being dropped on the pitches, to the council or the police.

"We have an open mind on this problem at the moment, but have not ruled out that items have been left there deliberately,'' said sport and leisure services manager Jane Blandford.

"Adults and young people use the playing fields in the football season, and they are also used for cricket in the summer.

"We were told about the broken glass and nails by footballers, who were very concerned that someone could hurt themselves.

"This has been a problem for the past two seasons, but has got worse recently.''
