THE RAF's dreams of retaining their 'Tough Guy' title nosedived when they were outstripped by a team of Warrington runners.

More than 3,500 competitors took part in the Wolverhampton-based event that is themed on a battle zone and involves running eight 'country miles' followed by an assault course.

Skipper Mark Pomfret led the 15-man Birchwood Bum Bags team, made up mainly of members of Spectrum Striders Running Club, to a memorable victory.

Spectrum runner Janet Robinson also came second in the women's section, completing the event in two hours, 18 minutes.

Mark said: "It gets called the toughest event in Britain and it certainly tests you. Those eight country miles are more like 10 of anyone else's and then you've got to crawl through barbed wire, freezing water, tyres and the rest of it.

"The RAF won it last year and made a big deal of challenging teams to try and beat them this time so they can't be too happy at the moment."No.MBC287-3.
