Traditionally, employees have been given a concessionary paid day's holiday for the religious procession while council business shuts down.

But this privilege has been dropped for new workers recruited after January 1, 1997, and for staff transferring from Cheshire County Council through local government reorganisation.

Staff who have a right to retain the concessionary day were asked in a ballot whether they wanted to keep the Walking Day leave or use it as a "floating" day to take on another occasion.

The 50-50 result means there will be enough staff on duty to man council departments on this year's Walking Day, Friday, July 3.

A council spokesman said: "The council is confident that Walking Day will be a normal working day this year.

"With more than 50 per cent of staff coming in, all services can be covered."
