AN EXTRA £2.5 million is to be spent on education in Halton.

The additional cash has been allocated as part of the borough's local government finance settlement of £107 million.

It means that schools in Widnes and Runcorn can now devote more time and resources to tackling various problems.

Halton MP Derek Twigg said the money will allow Halton to invest in its services.

He said: "Given that we have one of the worst problems of literacy and numeracy in the county and many classes of more than 30 pupils, not to mention the poverty and deprivation in the area, that money is particularly important.

"It is warmly welcomed by the people of Halton, especially teachers and parents."
