AN ex Grange School pupil is one of only 20 people from all over the UK to win a place on the Smallpiece Trust's 1997/8 Engineering Careers Foundation Year.

Charles Young, 18, from Acton Bridge, has already spent three months at Plymouth University studying engineering, design and management techniques.

And he spent January in France where he attended an intensive language course.

Now he's all set to travel to Oldenburg in Germany where he will work for three months at a company which specialises in refrigeration motors.

When he returns from his travels, Charles is due to study for a mechanical engineering degree at Bath University.

"Living and working abroad will offer me invaluable experience for my course," he said. "It will also help me in my ambitions of achieving chartered status and working abroad in a managerial position."
