KARATE champion Kevin Barlow has cut the opposition down to size to take the UK Martial Arts Federation's coach of the year award.

Barlow enjoyed a highly successful 1997 as he won the middle weight belt at the Federation's UK championships and coached several youngsters through the ranks of the associated England squad until they won full international call-ups.

He told the GUARDIAN: "I find the coaching very rewarding and to be acknowledged in this way is a real pleasure. It's good to see the youngsters coming through and doing well. I've been fortunate to work with some very talented people in the last year."

The Culcheth-based coach runs regular training sessions at the Hawthorne Centre between 5pm and 6pm on Friday evenings. Further details are available on 7624449.
