POET Terry Caffrey is set to make his debut appearance on the silver screen.

Terry, aged 42, of Park Road, Great Sankey, starts filming next week for Skin Flick, described as "a tongue-in-cheek gangster movie about the darker side of Subbuteo".

And GUARDIAN readers have the chance to join him on the screen - as extras in a fight scene!

Terry plays a doctor in the film, which also features actress Margi Clarke and an array of Merseyside soccer stars.

But he admits he doesn't know much more about the project yet and hasn't even had the chance to read his lines.

It has been a busy time for Terry. He's just finished writing a libretto for the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra with schoolchildren.

And later in the year he will be releasing a book of poetry and prose written with his friend and the director of Skin Flick, Keith Wilson.

"I didn't even know what a libretto was before I did this," he said. "It was fabulous but really hard work.

"I had to weave the children's writing into my own, which was then set to music."

Despite his recent successes, Terry insists he will keep his feet firmly on the ground.

"Youngsters relate to me and my work because I don't make out I'm anything special," he said.

"I failed my 11 Plus and left school without any qualifications, so if I can do it anyone can."

Skin Flick is due for nationwide release in March and could be screened at Warrington UCI.
