THE treasures of Warrington Museum and Art Gallery have been singled out by the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts.

The RA has put the town on the map in a guide to where the country's best artworks can be found. The booklet ties in with an exhibition currently showing at the Royal Academy in London in which Warrington's jewel in the crown - Flowers and Fruit by the Dutch artist Jan van Os - is on show.

Warrington is rated for its fine collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture by local artists such as Luke Fildes, James Charles, Henry Woods, George Sheffield and Oswald Garside.

And its Victorian and 19th century English watercolours are also noted.

The guide and exhibition is supported by the National Art Collections Fund charity which aims to help people discover art and to highlight interest in the country's outstanding collections.

The Royal Academy of Arts Guide to Regional Museums and Art Galleries is available from the Royal Academy, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, W1V 0DS. Telephone 0171 300 5665.
