RENT arrears in Warrington have remained virtually unchanged thanks to the borough council's programme to help tenants keep debts under control.

According to the latest figures, rent arrears rose by a fraction of one per cent with the overall total of arrears rising by less than £10,000 and a collection rate of just under 99.4 per cent.

Housing director Tom Roberts described the rise as 'negligible' and said the borough still has one of the best collection rates in Cheshire.

"It's inevitable that when rents go up every year it will increase the pressure on people's debts and this will have an effect on our arrears," Mr Roberts said.

He added that the council has one of the country's best run arrears services designed to stop tenants from getting into serious debt and help them reorganise their finances.
