I WAS interested to hear of the traffic island and speed humps proposed for Culcheth village centre, a scheme which is apparently intended to slow the speed of traffic along Warrington Road and improve the situation at its junction with Common Lane.

Hopefully, consideration will be given to the relocation of the bus stops situated on Common Lane close to this junction.

Every bus that stops there has the capability of holding up the traffic, often bringing the village to a standstill.

These bus stop locations on this narrow road date from the days of very light traffic flow through when buses had conductors to collect and haggle over fares en route, not at the kerbside.

While serving as the Culcheth 'village bobby', I submitted a number of reports strongly recommending the erection of a crash barrier along the outside kerb of Warrington Road for the length of the bend adjacent to the New Inn.

Still a very regular accident blackspot, only sheer good luck has prevented a pedestrian from being killed.

The provision of such a crash barrier in the past was always rejected on grounds of cost. As funds are now to be made available, I can only these matters will be attended to.
