HOUSEHOLDERS in Winsford are being given the chance to go green by buying home composting units at a reduced price.
The environmental and technical committee of Vale Royal Borough Council has decided that to involve as many families as possible, home composting units will be sold throughout Winsford at a special rate.
The units would cost about £30 to buy from a commercial outlet but they will be sold by the manufacturers in conjunction with the council at just £9.
They will be sold at a special 'one-day sale' on Sunday, September 13, at the Baron's Quay car park, Northwich.
But anyone wanting to be certain of obtaining a composter can do so by ordering and paying in advance with an order leaflet available at Wyvern House, Winsford.
Also, anyone wishing to see one of the composters before ordering can do so at Wyvern House.
It is hoped that 3,000 composter units will be sold at the subsidised price. Also, a special kitchen 'green' bin in which to collect organic kitchen scraps can be purchased for £2.50 instead of the usual price of £5.95.
Clr Brian Jamieson, chairman of the environmental and technical committee, said: "As a leading Local Agenda 21 authority, recycling is one of the many practical ways in which we are meeting our environmental responsibilities.
"We are inviting the borough's residents to take part in a recycling initiative aimed at reducing the 33,000 tonnes of domestic waste collected within the borough last year and disposed of through landfill.
"Up to 30 per cent of household and garden waste is organic and can be recycled to produce a nutritious compost for your garden.
"This scheme will help us move towards meeting the Government targets relating to composting of household organic waste - to recycle or compost 25 per cent of household waste by the year 2000 and encourage 40 per cent of domestic properties with a garden to carry out home composting by the same date."
The special offer is open to Vale Royal residents only and is limited to two composters per household.
Proof of residency, such as a utility bill, will be required for sales on the day.
