HISTORY was made at Barton Stadium on Monday night as Winsford United launched their first under-18s side.
The youngsters took on Oldham Athletic in a friendly as a warm-up to their debut season in the Bolton Combination League under the management of Steve Moores.
United club captain Mark Came, who started the Junior Blues just over a year ago, is delighted with the response from footballers in Winsford.
He said: "We had over 20 turn up for the under-18s and all the lads were from Winsford, so after only a month it's gone really well.
"It will be hard playing against teams like Runcorn and sides from Liverpool but we're looking to be strong within a couple of years. We're really looking forward to it."
First team manager Dalton Steele, who was watching the under-18s take the field for the first time, welcomed the new set-up and the possibility that some of the youngsters could be future Barton Stadium stars.
He said: "I don't discard anything. Mark Came is in charge of the juniors and if someone has what it takes then I'm sure he'll let me know."
The Blues put on a good showing in their first run-out, despite a 4-0 defeat.
Next Wednesday, August 19, they take on Runcorn at Barton Stadium in another friendly. Admission is £1 for adults, 50p for children.
