MIDDLEWICH-based poetry group the Salt Town Poets is celebrating its third anniversary today, Wednesday.

The organisation has been going strong in the town with its 'Poetry and Pints' sessions for three years.

A special birthday celebration is to take place tonight, bringing together poets, storytellers, singers, musicians and entertainers.

As Salt Town Poets chairman, Dave Roberts, said: "Our philosophy remains the same - good humour, a relaxed atmosphere and a lot of encouragement can bring out the best in the most diffident of performers.

"We welcome anyone who wants to perform either their own material or a favourite by someone else.

"Or if you don't fancy either, just come along, listen and enjoy."

Poetry and Pints started at the Kings Arms, Queen Street, in August 1995 following a meeting between Dave and the landlord John Chapman.

Apart from a brief sojourn at the Newton Brewery Inn, it has continued month in month out at the same place ever since.

Everyone is encouraged to join in. No-one is shouted down, no-one is criticised.

In recent years the Salt Town Poets has been branching out with performances at the Buxton Festival, Llandudno Arts Festival and Lancaster Arts Festival.

Their next performance is at the Crewe and Nantwich Folk Festival in September.

Members of the group also contribute to Middlewich's Folk and Boat Festival and are responsible for promoting and organising the festival's poetry competition every year.

Anyone interested in joining the group can attend the third birthday party tonight at 9pm in the Kings Arms, Queen Street, Middlewich.
