Before the cross was refitted to the top of the re-leaded spire of the church, it was actually gilded (covered with pure gold leaf). Why go to the expense of using precious metal? Well, gold is an extremely durable finish, but it also makes a statement about the Cross, that it is the most precious symbol of the Christian faith. The symbol reminds us of the real cross on which the son of God died; of the seriousness of our selfishness and our disobedience towards God and the Son of God, and the depth of God's love for us. The Bible is the God-inspired record of God's revelation of his love to men and women. Its ultimate revelation is this: a loving and obedient relationship with God our Father, through faith in Jesus Christ, His Son, by the enabling power of God the Holy Spirit, is the way to Heaven.
There is much more to say - and it is said in the Christian churches in Northwich, Sunday by Sunday.
