Francis Martin Barratt, who comes from the Manchester area, was in collision with the 16.26 Northwich to Manchester train just after it left Lostock Gralam station.
"He would have been killed outright," said Sgt Derek Cheetham of British Transport Police.
"There were no suspicious circumstances," he added.
The incident happened at around 16.40 on July 31 as the train travelled past the end of Harris Road.
Emergency services were called to the scene by the train's driver, but they were unable to save Mr Barratt.
An inquest into his death has been opened and adjourned.
