Poynton 0 Knutsford 2
KNUTSFORD opened this year's campaign with a fine win at Poynton.
Poynton's well grassed ground looked in splendid condition, much better than last season's corresponding game which Knutsford also won 3-2.
This match was not as enthralling, but was the perfect start against strong opposition.
Knutsford had a familiar look but this year are missing the Hartley brothers, Leigh, Doherty and Gibbons.
Karl Morley, formerly of Linotype, made his debut while the dependable Henry Flanagan played in central defence.
Nigel Deeley gave Knutsford a great start as he beat two defenders before drilling a low shot past the goalkeeper.
Brad Johnson aggravated a hamstring injury which saw Stewart Dow on as a substitute.
Last season's joint top scorer didn't take long to open his account and he added a second off a free-kick from Deeley.
It wasn't the swashbuckling football Knutsford's fans were used to by the end of the 97 season, but it was the start they needed and will provide a good launch pad for the months ahead.
TEAM: D. Johnson; Morley, Kenyon, Flanagan, Hall; B Johnson, Davy, Deeley, Walker; Senior, Gilligan. Subs: Dow (for B. Johnson 16), Highes ( for Davy 68) and Pollard (for Gilligan 80).
